Hae Won Sohn  손해원  孫海苑

Hae Won Sohn (b. 1992, Seoul, South Korea) is a visual artist, craftswoman and educator based in Alfred, New York. Her work explores the transposable and generative relationship between failure and success, product and byproduct, the authentic and the reproduction through a process-oriented approach working primarily with clay and plaster.

Employing mold-making and casting as a methodological, conceptual, and philosophical ground, Sohn creates works that liberate cast forms by tapping into their sculptural potential which emerge and evolve as embodiments of the systems and labor behind them.

Sohn’s work has been exhibited at Blaffer Art Museum, Malta Society of Arts (Valletta, Malta), Thomas Park Gallery (Seoul, South Korea), Stamp Gallery at the University of Maryland, MONO Practice and The Walters Art Museum. She has received the 2021 Janet & Walter Sondheim Art Prize, and was selected as a finalist for the 2019 Galerie Emerging Artist Award. She was an Artist-in-Residence at NARS Foundation and Baltimore Clayworks.

She teaches at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University as an Assistant Professor of Ceramic Art.
